Laskiaisrieha will return on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025 at Ullanlinnanmäki!
Laskiaisrieha is one of Finland’s largest outdoor sports events for students. It is organized annually in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Thousands of students from all over Finland gather together to enjoy the happy carnival atmosphere in the middle of the winter. The day culiminates in the legendary ABB’s Academic Downhill Competition, where teams compete for the title of “Best Downhill Vehicle”. The historical stage of Ullanlinnanmäki has seen many impressive vehicles during the years like saunas, UFOs, pirate ships and wind turbines!

The ABB’s Academic Downhill Competition
In the ABB’s Academic Downhill Competition teams compete against one another by taking turns piloting their home-made sleds through a course as spectacularly as possible. An experienced and versatile jury will give points to the teams based on things like distance, elegance, creativity and showmanship. The winning team will be awarded a prize and get to carry the title of “Best Sledge Rider in Town”!
Rules for the Downhill Competition:
- Teams are participating at their own risk - safety must be ensured
- The vehicle must not pose a danger to spectators.
- The vehicle must be able to be completely stopped within a reasonable time.
- The race will be held on either snow or gravel depending on the snow situation in February.
- Vehicles will be arranged at the starting area before the race. You can only begin your run after you’ve received permission from the organizers.
- The vehicle may only operate with human power - all types of motors are prohibited.
- If the vehicle fails to complete the entire course, it must be moved immediately according to the instructions of the organizers.
- The aesthetics of the vehicle must be within the limits of good taste.

Laskiasappro pub crawl is here again! Laskiaisrieha is over, but there are still hours to go until Gravitaatio? No worries! Laskiaisappro is offering a brilliant sequel and fun right after the Laskiaisrieha ends. Ski down the bars of the Helsinki to the AYY’s Gravitaatio. Ticket sales for Laskiaisappro and Gravitaatio will open on the 14th of February!
Laskiaisappro maps are distributed in Laskiaisrieha on Ullanlinnanmäki between 11:00 and 17:00, and the overall badge can be redeemed outside Apollo between 20:30 and 22:00. Based on your skill level, you will be awarded a badge for your appro performance in one of three different level options:
Bronze badge: 6 checkpoints
Silver badge: 9 checkpoints
Gold badge: 12 checkpoints
Participation in previous years Laskiaisappro is not required.
